Monk Madness kicked off our winter sports last week with an exaggerating pep rally, and nail biting games.

A pep rally was hosted on Friday afternoon, for the whole school to attend, and it didn’t disappoint. Starting with re-introducing the winning fall sports teams, everybody who won was recognized.
After the fall teams came out, it was time to introduce our winter sports, swimming and basketball. Each student athlete and coach got introduced.

The dance team then had two show stopping dance numbers that left everyone in awe. Then it was time for the pep rally games, In Monk madness fashion, the first game was a basketball shoot off.
After that there was then a game for the younger kids where they had to march in place with

their eyes closed and stay in a certain boxed area. Both of the games were fan favorites that had all the audience on the edge of their seats.
After school, it was time for the basketball games. Up first was the boys JV basketball team. For their first game, they really played their hearts out and tried their very best. The whole Oakwood crowd was so proud of them, even though they didn’t pull through a win.

Next up was the girls Varsity team. It was also their first game, and they definitely fought. “I feel that we started off great, and only went got better from there” explained Brennan, a 7th grader on the girls Varsity team. Throughout the first quarter, and most of the second our Oakwood girls team was winning. The girls were fighting so hard that two of their players fouled out in the fourth quarter, and had to sit the rest of the game out. Since they only had six players for this game, that means they were down a person. Brennan explains “When two great players fouled out, it was quite stressful. We had had an amazing game so far, even though the scoreboard might not have showed it. The team on the court didn’t want to let the team on the bench down”. On the court, the team may have felt stressed, but they did not show it to the crowd or even to the opposing team. The girls did not win the game, and the final score was 11-51. “I think we all felt pretty great, despite the fact that we didn’t win. We fought as hard as we could, especially in the last half when we changed up our defense.” Brennan recounts.

The last game of the evening was the Varsity boys game. This game definitely had the crowd on the edge of their seats. It was a fair matchup, with the final score being 38-45. These boys pushed through every challenge and were so close to pulling through a win.

It’s not too late to join winter sports! All teams, for basketball and swimming, need more athletes. If you’re hesitant to join, just come out to a practice. You can learn that’s what this time is for, learning and having fun. Even if you’re not a star athlete, you can still support your team by having a great personality, sportsmanship and leadership.
I’m sure all of the Oakwood Student athletes will agree with Brennan when she says “We just need more attendees to come support our Oakwood teams! The energy from the crowd definitely pumps up the teams to do better and maximize their potential!” Even if you can only come to one match or meet your attendance, helps the student athletes immensely.
GO EAGLES!!
