It’s a known fact that the girls definitely had their challenges this year, the biggest one probably being that they were a young team with few players. With only seven players and the oldest being a sophomore, the girls had to put in a ton of work this season. They had practice day after day, and it definitely paid off. These girls fought every single game, and always gave it everything they had.
The girls won four games this year, the most games in a season the girls varsity team has won in ten years. However the team wasn’t focused on just winning, each of the girls improved significantly, not just as individuals, but a team. By the end of the season, the varsity girls were more than just teammates, they had formed a true bond with each other.
Every one of the girls had something special they brought to the team besides their skills. A’Niyah brought her leadership, Amelia brought her determination, Brennan brought her dedication, Isla brought her passion, Londyn brought her intensity, Tina brought her courage, and CJ brought her perseverance. Kaiden, the team manager brought her enthusiasm. Both coach Knockett, and assistant coach Knockett brought their guidance, motivation, and support. All of these incredible characteristics made a team Oakwood couldn’t be more proud of.
10th graders Ameila and A’Niyah received additional recognition by the league. They were both given a spot on the top 50 North Carolina girls recruits.
However the varsity girls season isn’t completely over! They are eligible for the State Championship Tournament, on Tuesday. Their involvement will not be determined by the selection committee until this Saturday, so stay tuned!
Great job this season, girls and go eagles!
