The girls’ tennis team has begun its season with a strong sense of motivation and determination. Over the summer, players dedicated time to conditioning, drills, and team practices to ensure they were ready for fall competition. That preparation is already paying off as the Lady Eagles take the court.
The team has welcomed a new coach this year, Coach Terry Wicker. The team has been focusing on the basics while also developing strategy and teamwork. After improving serves and volleys, the team is ready to take on the season ahead. Coach Wicker has not only enforced good technique, but also taught the team good sportsmanship and strategic ability.
This year’s schedule is packed with exciting matches. The Lady Eagles will face schools such as Ridgecroft, Cape Fear Christian, Epiphany, Lawrence Academy, Kerr-Vance, and Faith Christian. Each match provides an opportunity not only to have fun on the court but also to grow as individuals and as a team. Many schools have mentioned that our girls exemplify outstanding sportsmanship after the games. The girls have shown other schools what Oakwood is all about.
One of the best aspects of being on the Oakwood tennis team is the camaraderie among teammates. It is shown through the every time at the end of the matches when someone is finishing up their singles and the majority of the team is standing on the sidelines cheering on that teammate. “My favorite part about the tennis matches is playing in general,” Lou Porter-Acee. “I feel free and concentrated on the sport I love to do. I love learning new things and getting better every day!” For the Lady Eagles, tennis is not only about winning matches but also about building trust with one another to strengthen the Oakwood community.
This year, the team also welcomed Leontina Radovic, an international exchange student from Germany, to the roster. She has quickly found her place, both on and off the court. “I’m really enjoying it because I really like the team,” Leontina said. “All the girls are very friendly, and we have a really good coach. I like that he focuses on technical things.” This shows how the team’s attitude goes beyond competition. It creates an environment where every player feels valued.
As the season continues, the Lady Eagles hope to grow with every match. With determination and the support of their school community, the team is set up for a good season but also creating memories that will last long after the season is over.
