The Oakwood school soccer program has shocked the state of North Carolina. Thanks to the efforts of Oakwood FC head coach Chris Nunnally, Oakwood FC has gone from a season of defeat in 2023, to a season in which the team has only lost two games and is heading into state playoffs as the number one seed and the TIC conference champions. This year, Oakwood FC holds a top 5 goalscorer in the nation, junior Eduardo Murillo-Ramriez. Coach Nunnally, one of the best coaches in the state and the best coach in 1A, with the help of Coaches Quesnel and the players, has turned the Oakwood soccer into a winning program.
This is the story of a team that went from a winless season to being ranked among the top public and private schools for soccer.
Evidence of a major shift in the Oakwood FC Eagles soccer team began during the 2024-25 season. This season marked the beginning of Oakwood FC’s turn to success. This change began with the development of current players and the influx of new students Louis Neimann, Eduardo Murillo Ramirez, and Alex Mothersole, who readily showcased their skills. The talent that these players brought to the team helped build up the confidence of the team to fufill its full potential. The 2024-25 season was a great season for Oakwood FC, with a respectable record of 11-8 against great competition and much larger schools. The 2024-25 season also saw a spectacular run through playoffs to the State Championship Final; while Oakwood FC did not secure the title, it provided the spark and confidence needed for this season.
This season, Oakwood FC has finished the regular season having only lost two games (both in friendlies), and heading into the playoffs with their head and hunger high. This is the story of a soccer program that, in the span of 2 years, due to the tireless dedication of coach Chris Nunnally and the relentless work of its players, has transformed. Putting in 24/7 effort, whether in practices, 6AM summer trainings, teams camps, or away games, the Oakwood FC Eagles went from a defeated season to an undefeated season, captivating the engagement of students and faculty around the school, and bringing the Oakwood community closer together in the school’s 30th anniversary.
