Crocheting is a skill that can be passed down from family and friends. The practice began to appear hundreds of years ago in a places you may not expect. The word crochet comes from the French word for “hook”. There is no one place where this art was created. In many countries, ancient hooks with a curved top resembling a crochet hook were found. Some origins may have been in China, Egypt, and Europe. But our most modern form of crochet was seen to come from the 17th-century crocheting in France. Many forms of crochet have come from other places. One exmple is the form of Amigirumi, a form of crocheting where the crocheter crochets in a circular pattern to create a doll or a toy. This is a very popular and easy form of crocheting in our modern world. The name originally comes from Japan. It originates from the word “Ami,” meaning crocheting or knitting, and the word “Nuigurumi,” meaning stuffed creature or stuffed doll.
What is the difference between crocheting and knitting? These two delicate art forms are very similar to each other. You can make around the same creation with both forms. Both need a yarn and a form of a hook. Knitting is more well known and practiced in today’s world. Knitting is generally done with two straight hooks that can sometimes be joined at the bottom. These are called needles. Crocheting is made using one hook with a curved hook-like structure at the top. Crocheted fabric will generally have more texture and be stiffer. This will allow it to be able to be used for making 3D designs and patterns. There are over 150 unique crochet styles and stitches in the world! Knitting is generally used to make pieces of cloth that are thinner and more stretchy, creating a smooth or even appearance.
