WELCOME BACK, OAKWOOD!!!
A new (academic) year has begun! This year will bring exciting, new experiences, but we must take care of ourselves to enjoy them!
Sunburnt after summer vacation? Sunburn is unfortunately common, but having one at school is far from ideal. So what can help? A lot of things, actually!
Hydrocortisone cream
Cool compress
Aspirin (this can help ease the pain)
If your sunburn is accompanied by nausea, chills, fever, faintness, extensive blistering, or purple discoloration, consult a doctor*
Good Habits to adopt:
Avoid the problem above by wearing sunscreen and a hat when outside in the sun. (Cool Oakwood baseball caps are available in Monk Hall!)
Just like on a sunny vacation, hydration is important, especially when it comes to sports, extracurriculars, or even thriving in the classroom. It’s recommended to drink around 8 cups (glasses) of water a day. Some suggestions for staying on top of your water intake include:
Bringing a refillable water bottle to school regularly
Make a goal to drink at least 4 cups of water during the school day
Now that we’re back at school, we have many burdens, but one is easy to lighten: your backpack. While it’s easy to dump anything and everything into your bag, it’s important for your back health to minimize the strain. Here are some tips to lighten your load:
Properly organize your bag. Is a half-eaten granola bar really necessary to keep in your bag? Remove the junk. Also, it is not necessary to keep all your papers in your bag all semester: clean out what you don’t need at school and leave it at home.
Folder, folders, folders! While some subjects with dense course loads may require a binder, documents from classes that require less space can be kept in a folder. Folders are great substitutes for binders as they weigh less and thus minimize strain on your neck and back.
