Oakwood students are diligently preparing for the fairytale-themed art show. The date for the show is currently unknown, but it is expected to be in March. It will be hosted in the Oakwood school’s gymnasium and admission is free. The students will showcase their various visual art projects by creating works for months beforehand.
For this year’s art show, the theme is fairytale. The subject matter for student artworks is going to be based around the art show theme. Students can come up with their own ideas, or they can spin a wheel of fairytale-themed words for inspiration. Some words included on the wheel are dragon, herb, wonderland, and runes. The hope is that students will look into different cultures surrounding fairytales, such as the large number of Japanese fairytales. Students should create three artworks per semester.
“I’m really looking forward to this year’s art show,” says Oakwood parent Debra Jackson. “I was really impressed with the work I saw last year. I expect this year to be just as amazing.”
To prepare for the art show, the students in Studio Art are studying the Principles of Design and Elements of Art. The class is run by Mr. Allen, and so far the class has accomplished much relating to those principles and elements. The studies will help them create compositions for their projects. These compositions are learn-guided meaning that students will be able to choose their medium, subject matter, and art style. The medium and art style should be inspired by another artist, and in order to find these artists, students created blogs based on ten different artists assigned to them. For each artist, students researched into either the artist’s life, inspiration, process, or a fact about the artist. They then chose a piece of artwork by said artist that demonstrates a particular Principle of Design that was assigned with the artist.
To have further understanding of the Principles of Design, students created card-sized collage artworks based on each principle to be made into trading cards. Materials for the collages include construction paper, envelopes, various writing utensils, and magazines. The trading cards will be used to help guide student art projects. These trading cards will be available at this year’s art show with a link to an artist blog made by the same student on the back.
All in all, Studio Art will be a very exciting class this year. The student’s studies relating to the Elements of Art and Principles of Design will produce amazing artworks for the art show, based around the theme of fairytales. People should be looking forward to this year’s art show to see Studio Art’s works. You will be able to view the Principle of Design trading cards, the artist blogs, and the various artworks created. It is still a while away but nevertheless, the students will enjoy seeing you there! For more information, contact Oakwood art teachers.
